The work is a collaboration with Boss Witch Productions, an artistic production company focused on the intersection of experimental sound art, ritual performance, video art, and transmedia collaboration within natural landscapes. Through ritual that connects the metaphysical realm with the tangible world, the Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos combines aspects of ancient pre-Hispanic and European cultures. This performative installation is a call to our departed loved ones, and a space for us to remember our own existence and potential futures. Endless Life will unfold over two days. On November 1, 2018, performers and community members will join together to build a communal altar. Objects of remembrance and offering will be added to the altar over the course of the evening. The following day, Escobar will curate a series of performances throughout the Bowtie that will celebrate both the living and the dead. Gaines devised musical translations of four influential speeches using a conceptual rule-based musical notation system. The score is based on: Malcolm X’s last public speech, made in 1965 in Detroit’s Ford Auditorium; Peace, Power, Righteousness: An Indigenous Manifesto (1999) by Canadian Mohawk scholar and activist Taiaiake Alfred; Raúl Alcaraz and Daniel Carrillo’s Indocumentalismo Manifesto, an Emerging Socio-Political Ideological Identity (2010); and Olympe DeGouges’s 1791 Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen. In this work, the artist "completes" his memoir ("Gifts of the Spirit") together in ecstatic communion with his collaborators. This living machine makes a tightly choreographed and scored visual spectacle bringing together writing, reading and listening into a layered performative action resulting in a collectively authored text and sound score. Athey has been writing his memoir since 1980 when he moved away from the Pentecostal and Spiritualist practices in which he was raised. His writing describes the experience of having been raised as a living saint within an environment of abuse, vibrating with the energy of the otherworldly, but doing so without faith.
